, why all of the love? good morning, welcome to early state. i'm christine rom yans. >> and i'm john berman. it's january 28th it's monday. we'll begin with that developing story out of brazil. deadly chaos at a nightclub. early yesterday morning. killing a staggering 233 people. many of them college students celebrating their last weekend of summer break. it happened at kiss nightclub in santa maria. recovery workers now say they're hearing the eerie sound of ring tones. we're in santa maria with the latest. >> reporter: smoke filled the air when the first firefighters entered the nightclub. where shirtless men were already trying to rescue some of the injured. emergency vehicles arrived not realizing the extent of the tragedy they faced. chaos and terror among survivors and the body of victims all around. the fire broke out at about 2:00 in the morning at a nightclub called kiss in santa maria in bra sail's southern most state. the club was packed with some 2,000 people, twice its legal capacity according to officials >> translator: people who were inside the facility when they cam

politically. he allowed john burton to talk him into running for the state legislature. an unsuccessful effort for the state assembly. he went on to become, obviously, a supervisor in the city and county of san francisco. and in those days it was a different city. it was dramatically different. there was no such thing as a so-called progressive, david campos. there was no such thing as somebody in that category. george moscone, philip burton, represented that which we all now richly enjoy. george went on to become a state senator. and in that capacity, scott, it was george moscone who shepherded the bill that removed criminal penalties between consenting adults in this state that cost people their positions as teachers, as doctors, as nurses, as lawyers in those days. it was a bill that we orchestrated together. and george did what has never been done since, and that is cause the senate to hookup in a 20 to 20 tie in the late dimely was flown in from colorado to break the tie to give us that bill. that set the stage, scott, for all the things that have occurred in this state, and ultimately in

in rhode island. it will be ten years next month. that's when 100 people were killed. attorney john barlick represented families. he wrote a book called "killer show." it details that devastating fire, its causes and the heart breaking aftermath. john joins me now from providence, rhode island. we were talking a couple of months ago here at cnn about this book of yours and i immediately, when i saw the news out of brazil, i thought of you, rhode island, the pyrotechnics, the foam you brought in to show us how highly flammable it was. there were many similarities, were there not? >> hello, brooke, yes. this is like a recurrent nightmare. there were many parallel facts, at least as brazil's situation has been reported. >> run through a couple of them. what else? what else was similar? >> well, according to initial reports we have improper use of pyrotechnics in an unsuitable venue, we have flammable wall coverings, we have gross overcrowding as we had at the station. and we have staff that seems woefully undertrained to deal with emergencies. >> i read your opinion piece on cnn.com and you wr
